The remote-work setup that holds up

Forget the gadget lists. Four basics that make the biggest difference to working from home.

Remote-work advice tends to turn into shopping lists. In practice, a few unglamorous basics matter more than any gadget.

1. A screen at eye level

Looking down at a laptop all day is a common cause of neck and shoulder strain. A stand, or a stack of books plus a separate keyboard, fixes most of it.

2. Light in front of you, not behind

Sitting with a window behind you makes you a silhouette on calls. Face the light, or put a lamp behind your screen.

3. Audio people can hear

Colleagues forgive grainy video far more readily than echoing audio. A basic headset with a microphone is the single best upgrade for calls.

4. A clear start and finish

Without a commute, work days quietly stretch. A short ritual — a walk, closing the laptop, writing tomorrow's first task — tells your brain the day is over.

Try today: Raise your screen so the top edge is roughly at eye level and notice how your shoulders feel by the afternoon.
