Learning a new skill online: a plan that actually sticks

There's no shortage of free courses. Finishing one is the hard part. A simple structure that helps.

Online courses make it easy to start learning almost anything, and just as easy to stop after the second video. The difference between people who finish and people who don't is rarely talent; it's structure.

Pick a project, not a subject

“Learn spreadsheets” is endless. “Build a monthly budget sheet that totals itself” has a finish line, and it tells you exactly which lessons matter.

Small, regular sessions beat long weekends

Twenty to thirty minutes on most days tends to stick better than one marathon session. Tie it to something you already do, like after your morning coffee.

Practise before you feel ready

Watching feels productive but doing is what builds skill. After each lesson, try the technique on your own project, even badly.

Ask for help early

Forums, course communities and AI assistants are good places to get unstuck. Describe what you tried and what happened — you'll get far better answers.

Try today: Write down one small project you'd like to finish in a month, and schedule your first 20-minute session.
